Portland’s Mimicking Birds gave me Grizzly Bear-with-just-a-hint-of-Modest Mouse vibes upon first listen, so you can imagine my amusement when upon further research, I discovered that they’ve toured with Modest Mouse (and a slew of other favorites like Deer Tick and Jenny Lewis) and are signed to frontman Isaac Brock’s label, Glacial Pace. The more I listened, however, the more I realized that Mimicking Birds really aren’t mimicking anything specific at all. With their most recent single, “Owl Hoots”, their own mix of really smart psych folk and woodsy electronics evolves subtly until presenting itself as a different creature altogether. The gorgeous build and intricate texturing provide a warm arts and crafts feel, until the intensity reaches a point where no one is paying attention to their friendship bracelet-making any longer. Check out “Owl Hoots” above and “Bloodlines” below with urgency, lest you waste a couple of seconds not hearing them. Both songs are from Mimicking Birds’ sophomore LP, Eons, out as of two weeks ago.
