Steinbier Lager – Steel & Oak Brewing (Freigeist Bierkultur)

By Mike @mikescraftbeer

Steel & Oak Brewing in New Westminster did a collaboration with Freigeist Bierkultur of Germany called the "Steinbier Lager". A Steinbier is a style of beer where you super heat grainte rocks then run the hot wort over the rocks causing the wort to caramelize. The beer pours an amber colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of lots of malts, caramel and a fruity finish. The flavour is of caramel, sweet toffee, mild resin, earth and mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 30. This is one of two or three of this style I have been able to try and I am a big fan. Running the beer over the hot rocks helps build a large caramel flavour without a huge alcohol content.
