The Steelers weren't about to lose their franchise quarterback, and they made sure about that Friday.
The Steelers announced they signed Ben Roethlisberger to a contract extension less than month after general manager Kevin Colbert confirmed the sides started talks on an extension.
Roethlisberger was heading into the final year of a $102 million contract he signed in 2008. The Steelers typically re-sign their quarterbacks with two years remaining, but owner Art Rooney II informed Roethlisberger before the start of training camp that the team was putting off an extension until the offseason.
Both Colbert and Rooney were confident the deal would get done sooner than later.
Roethlisberger is coming off his best statistical season. He became the first player in Steelers history to win at least a share of the NFL passing title and established franchise single-season marks in passing yards and completions (408) and tied his team record of 32 touchdown passes.
Roethlisberger's 116 wins is fourth most behind Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
