Steelers eyes on 'wow' athlete from small school in undrafted LB Howard Jones
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Shepherd OLB Howard Jones as an undrafted free agent and he got to show the team's coaches what he could do during the team's rookie minicamp.
Jones (6'2 1, 235) holds the school record for sacks (35) for the Shepherd Rams in 46 starts.
Rotoworld writes:
'A "wow" athlete, Jones ran 4.6-flat at the Combine with a 40 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. He could afford to get stronger and fill out his frame, but has impressive 34 1/8-inch arms to separate from would-be blockers. Jones is short on technique but long on upside, and his special teams experience gives him a chance to stay active on game days as a rookie. Jones is an intriguing project for Steelers DC Dick LeBeau.'
Projected as a mid- to late-round draft pick, Jones fell out of the draft and into the Steelers lap.
“I know they pass rush tough here. They love pass rushing, so I definitely had to choose the Steelers,” Jones said, via Alan Robinson of Tribelive.com.
“They've always had pass-rushing linebackers, quick linebackers, and I definitely feel I can fit in the role.”
“I know I need to work on my knowledge of the game,” Jones said during the three-day Steelers rookie minicamp, which ended Sunday.
“I definitely feel I can fit in that role,” he said. “(It's not Division II), but it's still football to me and I've been playing it since I was 5, 6 years old. It's still the same game to me.”
