The Steelers lost more players to injuries, but this time they won a game, beating the Buffalo Bills 23-10 today at Heinz Field.
Over the course of the game, the Steelers lost guard Ramon Foster (ankle), linebacker LaMarr Woodley (calf) and rookie safety Shamarko Thomas (ankle).
They did pick up their third victory to improve to 3-6, still in last place in the AFC North. Even Jarvis Jones picked up a first, the rookie linebacker’s first sack.
They also scored after forcing a turnover when Ryan Clark intercepted rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel and returned it 37 yards to the Buffalo 13 in the fourth quarter.
Shaun Suisham turned that into a 37-yard field goal and a 20-3 lead. Suisham added a 23-yard field goal, his third of the game, with 4:34 left after Antonio Brown returned a punt 50 yards.
Buffalo (3-7) scored its only touchdown with three seconds left, after the Bills called time out with five seconds to go. E.J. Manuel threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Chriss Gragg on fourth down.
Le’Veon Bell ran for a 4-yard touchdown as the Steelers extended their halftime lead to 17-3 in the third quarter.
Before doing so, they first pulled off a little trickery while lining up for a 29-yard field goal. They drew Buffalo’s Marcell Dareus offside somehow during the snap count. Given new life, they moved in for the touchdown with Bell running behind a mammoth pancake block thrown by Mike Adams, lined up at tight end on that play.
Helping set up the score was a 40-yard reception by Brown. Brown had his 104 yards on six catches by the end of three quarters, and also returned the punt 24 yards to start that touchdown drive.
The Steelers came from behind to take a 10-3 halftime lead.
Ben Roethlisberger threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery to snap a tie with 1:55 left in the second quarter. It was Cotchery’s sixth touchdown catch of the season and fourth in two games.
Roethlisberger completed two big passes on that 86-yard drive. One came as he was being sacked, tossing the ball over the middle to Bell, who ran most of the 34 yards on the play. The other occurred with Brown wide open on the right side for a 24-yard pickup to the five.
Earlier, Jonathan Dwyer converted to third-and-one situations into first downs and Emmanuel Sanders ran 25 yards to set up Suisham’s 36-yard field goal that tied the game 3-3.
Sanders’ run around left end came on the wildcat, after Bell took the snap and handed it off. It looked as though Sanders would then pitch it back to Roethlisberger, who was split to the left, but kept it and scooted down the sideline.
