You scroll through outfits on Pinterest or look at what others are wearing and you feel daunted by the task of putting a stylish outfit together. The accessories, the colors, all the trickery. It's just too much. While it may look tough, it doesn't have to be. Often, it just takes one small touch to make an outfit look complete. In today's post, I am going to show you how statement accessories, just one per outfit, can make a huge difference. Even the most stylishly challenged can do this, I am sure of it.

What inspired this post was when my client bought these statement flats from Louise et Cie. When she bought them I told her that these shoes could easily make simple outfits look more interesting. If she was wearing a basic pair of black pants, like these from Theory, and a white top, like this blouse from French Connection, it would be the shoes that would make the look less drab. Beyond this type of a basic look, these shoes could amp up any easy outfits, like jeans and a sweater, a solid colored dress, and more.

To show that the the small addition of these shoes can make a big difference, I kept the rest of the accessories simple using silver hoop earrings from gorjana and a black bag from MICHAEL Michael Kors.

Here again, it's the shoes that are making the difference to this very basic outfit. I styled this Banana Republic shirtdress with a pair of colorblocked heeled sandals from J. Crew. The rest of the look is simply accessorized with a navy hobo and a gold necklace from Stella & Dot.

Remember, statement accessories should be versatile, not special. Whatever statement accessories you purchase, make sure they go with a lot in your wardrobe.

Statement accessories aren't only found in shoes, you can add small statements through just about any accessory, including handbags, like I did here using this purple handbag from Vince that I styled with a sleeveless jacket from Ted Baker, tweed ankle pants from J. Crew, a navy tank from Rebecca Taylor and beige sandals from Steve Madden. For the jewelry I used beaded bracelets from Ann Taylor and stud earrings from LOFT.

If your wardrobe is primarily in neutral shades, don't discount what a handbag in a pop color can do. Granted, you won't wear it all day like you would a pair of shoes or a piece of jewelry, but you will get a lot more use out of it than you might think.

Statement accessories can be easy to add to an outfit when you have scarves on hand. Not only will they jazz up simple ensembles that are neutral based, but if you purchase printed scarves that work with the main colors of your wardrobe, you'll be able to wear them with so much of what you own.

In the look above, this colorful Nic + Zoe scarf gives this monotone outfit consisting of a pair of white jeans from Lucky Brand, a drapey v-neck tee from Theory, grey sandals from Cobb Hill, a stone colored bag from Kooba and navy stud earrings from Janna Conner.

Even if you are just running around or keeping it casual, statement accessories can make a huge difference. In these cases, you don't want or need to be overly accessorized but don't want to feel blah and boring in your outfits, one statement accessory can achieve this.

In the outfit above, this very casual dress from Boden, that has been accessorized for a casual day with Sam Edelman sandals and brown tote from Kenneth Cole, gets an upgrade with this colorful bib from Bauble Bar.

The next time you are looking to accessorize an outfit, don't think it has to be this arduous and tricky process. Start small by thinking about adding statement accessories. Try including just one to your outfits and notice what a difference it makes.
