On Tuesday, May 21st, Microsoft pulled back the cover on the new Xbox, which is called the Xbox One. Now, four days after the reveal, I discuss what I think of the impending console.
I sat there watching, waiting, and anticipating something fresh and new. For the most part it was fresh but did it feel right? In the end I'm still not sure, but I can tell you what I think and let you make a decision. As soon as Microsoft stepped on to the stage I knew we were in for the usual talk of the Kinect and how the console runs. But what I didn't know was how they were going to present it. I was eager to see what was in store for us, being one of the biggest fan basis in the world. What I ended up seeing was the lack of what I want to buy a console for, video games, and after the reveal I saw many others left dazed and confused.
The Controller: I looked in astonishment, what I saw was something that looked just like what I saw eight years ago. The Xbox One controller has seen over 40 design changes, which must have been small and internal because the only things that looked different was the the analog sticks and back buttons. Sure it's nice to see Microsoft caring about its fan base, seeing as how it looks just like the 360 controller (which was fantastic), but sometimes I want to see something different. I'm not asking for a total redesign but more of just a new look. What I do happen to like is the new rumble in the triggers. It adds a nice touch to something that, overall, doesn't really make sense to me.
The Xbox One: "Dude, that looks like a VCR box." This is what my best friend said when I showed him what the actual console looked like. Sure it may look a tad bulky but c'mon, does it really look old? It's shiny and cool looking (9 year old inside me) and catches your eye as soon as you gaze upon it. This is a good thing, no matter how you look at it, many people buy items and gadgets solely off its appearance. Microsoft won't just make money off the look though, but the Xbox name itself. After the reputation the 360 set up in America, many will look to the Xbox One as a better 360. Now let's talk software and internal jazz, due to some of its restrictions, the Xbox One just doesn't sound fun to use. It will require players to connect the system to the internet at least once a day. This means if you don't have an internet connection you can't play games on the Xbox One. This feature isn't an overall bad guy though, it makes the update process seem like it's not even there.
