Don’t think that digital downloads and cloud services are killing DVD’s and Blu-rays. It’s only the beginning for the physical media. Sony and Panasonic have now teamed up to prove that by creating an optical disc capable of storing 300GB of data.

Sony and Panasonic officially announced their joint venture in making this optical disc available for average customers. According to the press release, this disc will head out to development by the end of 2015. Both companies believes that “in recent years, there has been an increasing need for archive capabilities, not only from video production industries, such as motion pictures and broadcasting, but also from cloud data centers that handle increasingly large volumes of data following the evolution in network services.” So, with the development of this new disc, they hope to solve those issues by allowing better and easier archive capabilities.

Sound of this is surely amazing but, is it really the time for improving the capacity of optical discs? I mean these days we can store up 300GB of data on a couple of tiny SD cards. I think these companies would stand a better chance at making a better flash memory chip than this next-gen optical disc. Then again, like The Verge says “professional industries use high-capacity discs to store things like high-definition film and move large amounts of data” and this could just be the thing for them.
