1. Winning season....That curse has been broken.
2. Going to the Playoffs....That's a curse about to be broken.
3. Winning a series from the Padres.....that's going to have to wait until next year.
The Pirates can't seem to get out of their own way when it comes to playing the Padres at PNC Park. In two out of the first three games of this four game series, the Pirates have gotten a solid performance from their starting pitcher only to have the bats fall silent and waste them both. In the first game, the offense made Andrew Cashner look like Cy Young, chasing and missing Curveballs out of the zone all night while not being able to handle the few pitches that entered their wheelhouse. Cashner even stole a base and scored a run to help his own cause as AJ Burnett lost another well pitched game due to no run support.
Tonight, Charlie Morton pitched an 8 inning Gem and left with a 2-1 lead after a clutch 2 out bomb from Andrew McCutchen. In my opinion, Morton should have been allowed to go out in the ninth to go after the complete game victory since he more or less stifeled the Padres all evening, but how could you argue against Melancon? 4 of the 7 Padres that Melancon faced got a hit to give the Padres a 3-2 lead, and eventually the win. In all, the only to Pirates to record hits tonight were McCutchen and Morneau. Walker, who was on when Cutch hit the go ahead shot, got on on a mishandled third strike by Padres Catcher Rene Rivera.
This Padres team is really starting to annoy me to Brewers like levels. There is nothing special about them yet they come to Pittsburgh every year and clean the Pirates clocks. Maybe next year will be the year they finally break that curse, which may also be another North American sports record that the Pirates hold...Most consecutive years of never having won a series against a team in your own ballpark since it opened.
