At a mere 17 years of age, the career of Irish folk-rock songwriter, SOAK, (born Bridie Monds-Watson) has just begun. She has a unique way of shaping yearning melodies with an air of sadness and regret into a mature sound far beyond her years. As one of the first additions to CHVRCHES new record label, Goodbye Records, SOAK has shown great musical potential in the few songs she already released.
Entering into music at the age of 14, she gained praise from big UK artists like Snow Patrol and toured with Bombay Bicycle Club, CHVRCHES and George Ezra. Her latest single, “Blud”, is her catchiest release so far. The track is filled with body and purpose, while still maintaining its folk roots with gentle simplicity. Acoustically, “Blud” would hold its own, relying upon SOAK’s pacific, lyrically ambiguous, stream of consciousness vocals and delicate melody that hover over comforting rhythm guitar. The timely addition of tinkling piano, percussion and a solid bass line infuses this folk-based song with liveliness. SOAK sweeps from the retrospective verses into the soothing chorus of “You’re in my blood/I’m in your blood/Let’s just forget,” leaving you spellbound with a sense of reassurance and wisdom you might not expect from a 17 year old.
