So My Kid Drank Old, Room Temp Milk…

By Lindsayleighbentley @lindsayLbentley

Two days ago Henry discovered a bottle of raw milk that Miles had stashed away in his sock drawer a few days before.  It had clabbered, leaving a separated product of whey and essentially, sour cream.  (I should have taken a picture of it!)

What I didn’t realize is that he gave it to Miles, who readily drank it right up!

For a moment I freaked out.  I grew up on pasteurized milk so my instincts were that what had happened was very bad.  I mean, if you drink regular milk that has been setting out for 3 days it would be putrid, rancid, moldy and make you sick, right?  It would be cause for a call to poison control and you may need to induce vomiting and prepare yourself for a long night of painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, and possibly an ER visit.

But then I remembered, the milk was raw, duh, it’s all we drink. This means that the live cultures in it would have killed any harmful bacteria before it became a problem.  That this soured cream and whey that he readily drank down is actually a superfood.  Rich in probiotics and live, active cultures!  Not only safe, but healthy.

It’s been 2 days and Miles hasn’t skipped a beat.  Normal diapers, regular eating habits, good sleep.  Ahhh…

I love you, raw milk.

live well. be well.
