Welcome to the Designer Crafts Connection Blog Hop with Smoothfoam. Many of us have seen Smoothfoam in our local Michaels stores. Most may be familiar with the Smoothfoam balls. I was excited to receive a few different shapes, but was instantly drawn to the Smoothfoam Discs. I have seen some fabulous canvases in the round, so when I saw these, I knew I wanted to use this 12″ Smoothfoam Disc as a canvas. Smoothfoam can be a great substrate for projects because it can be painted, sanded, carved, covered, etc.
I had fun with this one and it ended up completely different from what I started with. I started by covering the disc with gesso using a gift card, keeping some areas really thin to allow the real Smoothfoam texture to peek through. I used Golden paints in to create a basic background using a mixture of cobalt teal, titanium white, green gold, primary yellow, and phtalo blue. The background was not really working for me, until I turned the disc on its side. Now it was starting to speak to me. Next, I used various stencils from Creative Workshop and Dylusions along with some Ranger Dylusions sprays to add more depth to the background. Using vermillion, cadmium orange, and light magenta, I drew little circles with my fingers and a few light magenta swipes. Love finger-painting on my canvases too! I also drew circles around the painted circles with Liquitex Ink in raw umber. Finally, I spritzed areas with a water bottle and allowed the inks/paints/sprays to lightly blend and run creating fabulous ‘drippage’. However, once I dried it a little with my heat gun and while I was turning it around, I found I liked it even better upside down. So, glued a little Melody Ross textile tag to my canvas and Voila! I am proud to be artsy!
I love that I could create texture and depth on the Smoothfoam and that it dries really quickly. It is also now the lightest canvas I have ever created and will be easy to hang on my studio wall.
