Upon arriving at Fort Siloso, you have two options as to where to start your journey. You can start by climbing up the skywalk and take a glimpse of the magnificent view of the surrounding islands of Sentosa and take a few photos of yourself standing above a clear glass. That if you're not afraid of heights. But no worries though, it is 100% safe. Tried it myself!
OR go ahead the front entrance of Fort Siloso and start your journey by immersing yourself in the story of World War II inside the Surrender Chamber. Just so you know, Surrender Chamber have an admission fee of S$5. If you're a history buff, it'll be worth your money.
So here's a little overview about Fort Siloso. It is located in the western tip of Sentosa- formerly known as Pulau Blakang Mati. It was built by the British to guard the western part of Keppel Harbour and the stocks of coal that are stocked there. Later during the Japanese Occupation, it was turned into a camp for the prisoners of war. It was only returned to the British when the war ended.
In 1967, the British withdrew and Blakang Mati was handed to the Singapore Maritime Command and the Singapore Armed Forces. A few years later, Singapore Government decided to develop the island for recreational purposes. From Pulau Blakang Mati, it was renamed to Sentosa.
Your visit in Fort Siloso will enlighten you about the story of the men who had served here while you explore the gun emplacements, buildings and tunnels. You will have an idea as to what was going on inside those tunnels, and gain knowledge about the guns they were using in those times.
The next time you plan to visit Sentosa, take a look at this amazing place. Indulge yourself to history and learn more about World War II. You might discover some things that are not discussed on your history class.
