Noun clauses are usually introduced by the connecting word that. The question words why, what, where, when, how etc., can also be used to introduce noun clauses.

We sometimes leave out the relative adverb in such clauses, and many writers prefer "that" to "why" in a clause referring to "reason":

Compound words create special problems when we need to pluralize them.
