simple coconut chutney recipe is a famous and handy south indian condiment to accompany idli,dosa,pongal,vadai etc.Whenever we need to make a side dish in a hurry this coconut chutney comes in priority. In Hindi this chutney recipe is known as nariyal ki chatni or nariyal chutney. Coconut is nariyal in hindi.In malayalam, it is called as thenga chammanthi. Only difference is they make it as thick as thuvayal and they serve without tadka.

Variations of coconut chutney:

There are many variations in thengai chutney or thengai thogayal. Below are some.


Udupi style coconut chutney: in udupi style they add tamarind and garlic. Some will have a little jaggery as well.

Kerala coconut chutney recipe:

As we all know coconut is a staple ingredient in kerala. Like us Tamils, they also make fresh coconut chutney and serve it with idli,dosa,vada and uttapam. They even serve it with rice making the coconut chutney like thuvaiyal and call it as thenga chammanthi. The uniqueness of Kerala coconut chutney is it looks creamy in texture, they use mild spice and the coconut flavor tops the chutney.

Ingredients for Thenga chutney:

Coconut: Choose coconut not so tender and not so matured. Medium ones taste great for coconut chutney.
Roasted gram: If you like the nutty flavor in the chutney, you should not miss adding gram.
Green chiles : For spice, add green chili or red chili. Both vary in flavor.
Small onions & ginger : these two add more flavor to the chutney.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Coconut shredded
  • 1 tbsp Roasted gram / pottukadalai
  • 4 to 5 Nos Green chilies
  • 3 nos Small onions
  • 1/2 inch Ginger
  • To taste Salt

To temper:

  • 1 tsp Peanut oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Urad dal
  • Few PInches Hing
  • 1 Sprig Curry leaves

Instructions

  • In a mixie cup,add coconut,pottukadalai,small onion,ginger,green chilies and salt together.
  • Grind altogether to chutney consistency.
  • Now heat a tadka pan, add oil and season with mustard seeds, urad dal, hing and curry leaves.
  • Add the tadka to chutney,mix and serve.

How to make coconut chutney:

In a mixie cup,add coconut,pottukadalai,small onion,ginger,green chilies and salt together.

Grind altogether to chutney consistency.

Can we make nariyal chutney in advance and preserve it in the refrigerator?

Personally i dont recommend preparing the nariyal ki chutney in advance as it is not healthy option as well as it get spoiled easily. Usually we can make this chutney recipe within a short time with no pre-work needed.

What are the variations of nariyal chutney?

There are many variations in coconut chutney recipes. Some add garlic or roasted peanuts or tamarind or mint leaves or coriander leaves. Each gives a different flavor and taste. According to your taste you can change and try it.

Can we say coconut chutney is vegan and gluten free?

Yes we can say it as the chutney is made with only plant based ingredients there is no dairy products added and it is gluten free only.
