Silver Firs, the indie six piece from Switzerland, categorizes themselves as ‘woodland tropicalia.’ At first it’s the kind of silly string of words that makes no sense, but the minute you press play on their single “Signals” it’s immediately apparent what that means. With a mix of pop vocals and lush instrumentation – the first two minutes of the track transport you to a woodland. It’s soft yet bouncy, and has warm embers that are meant to cut through the cold. By juxtaposing the fresh tropical pop sounds of a St Lucia with a mood of the woods – Silver Firs truly create something unique and new. Of the track singer and multi-instrumentalist Raphael Elmiger says:
„Signals“ is either a field study about nightlife or a dystopian sci-fi rock-opera. We’re not so sure ourselves. The idea for the song came to me when I played around with these really warm sounding wooden timbales some old percussion guy just sold me. You hear them in the beginning. I thought I’d contrast that with a Yamaha CS-80 like synth to give it a slight Blade Runner feel.
“Signals” is the first track off their forthcoming EP#3 out 10/23 – check out the track above and be sure to grab their amazing EP.
