Shy John – Brewery and Yum Cha at Yagan Square

Perth Dim Sum and Brewery under the one roof! Love it.

Yum cha and a brewery, it's one of those brilliant ideas where you wonder why didn't someone think of that earlier? Shy John - Perth's newest yum cha hotspot combined with an in-house microbrewery, is open from 11am until late at night. This means you can seek out dim sum at any time of the day; beer in one hand, dim sum in the other.

About Shy John - Brewery and Yum Cha

There's nothing shy about Shy John and the name pays homage to John Pong Shying, the first known Chinese born settler to Australia in 1818. Located on the north side of Yagan Square, the restaurant is an impressive two-storey building, which can accommodate up to 500 people. Industrial meets Asian; the fit out is impressive, fusing tough materials softened by an oriental influence. Large windows in the downstairs section allow you to view the chefs in their element, food prepping the dim sum for the day.

Shy John is the brainchild of Ian Chin who has a long history in the hospitality industry. He's the man behind other popular eateries - Noodle Forum, Ramen Boy and Hiss & Smoke (also located at Yagan Square).

Shy John Dim Sum Menu

The menu is extensive covering lunch and dinner options and the ever-popular dim sum selections. For those of you who would rather acquaint yourselves with the five craft beers available on tap, six local favourites or the cider which is locally produced in the Swan Valley, a bar menu offering smaller portions of dim sum is also on offer.

Having attended the recent opening night, Shy John sure delivered the goods when it came to sampling their cuisine.

From the dim sum menu, the Shy John signature prawn dumplings - $8.50, seared radish cake with Chinese sausage - $6.50 and pork floss crispy man tao - $6.50, were all standouts. The prawns plump and juicy and the radish cake soft and delicious.

Featuring on Shy John's dinner menu, the Shy John signature Peking duck pocket: roast duck, leek, cucumber, sesame 3 pieces pastry & hoi sin sauce - $11.80 was lovely. The meat was melt in your mouth tender and although I prefer a traditional pancake, the pocket was an interesting twist on a classic Chinese delight.

My personal favourite was the Szechuan beef tartare wagyu sirloin (raw), Szechuan pepper, crispy Chinese cruller, pickled garlic & ginger - $15.80. Beautifully prepared, it was a gorgeous combination of flavours. Definitely one I'd recommend.

Shy John Dinner Menu

It's not all about the dim sum at Shy John and the main menu includes large sized portions of dishes that cater for group dining. We all know there's no need for food envy when it comes to Asian style dining because it's all about sharing. The kitchen contains a barbeque and wok section and Ian Chin speaks highly of the Cantonese cuisine and roast meat selections.

Shy John has set a new standard when it comes to yum cha in Perth and it's sure to become a destination for the masses.
