Shubael Little Pioneer Village in Cannelton, Indiana is one amazing resource!

This Harrison County attraction is a pioneer village like you’ve never seen before.

It began in the year 2000 with the dedication of the Hinton Cabin. Since then, it has grown! The “new” cabin additions have included the Adam Shoemaker Cabin, the Homer Hull Carter Cabin (built in 1858), and the James Falls Cabin. Together, they form the unique link to the past that is Shubael Little Pioneer Village.

Shubael Little was the original owner of this plot of land. A pioneer, his two wives are also buried at a cemetery that was uncovered in the woods that make up the historical attraction. More than that, Little operated a grist mill on Little Deer Creek, helped get a school going in Rome, and got the Cannelton Masonic Temple in motion.

What’s so special about a bunch of cabins? Well, they are exceptionally old and give a glimpse into the pioneer days of Indiana. More than something you walk by, the Shubael Little Pioneer Village in Cannelton is something you walk into!

During our time at the site, we toured through several of the cabins. A few were closed for repairs but for the most part, we were able to wander in and out of them and browse the Indiana history to our hearts content. Old letters, photos, books, and more are displayed inside these cabins and shops.

Although looking at the way people once lived in such close quarters is interesting enough, the addition of the Edgar Carter Blacksmith Shop and Forge plus the working beehive oven make it truly unique. Again, that’s not all!

There’s also a carpenter shop, sheep pen, and even the Troy Stone Jail–we couldn’t help but pop inside and take a few pictures! The Millstone one room school has been moved and other projects are currently underway. The Oriole Methodist Church is going to be relocated to the property and other cabins are waiting to be rebuilt or repaired as well.

It’s an exciting time for Shubael Little Pioneer Village! They’ve got some really big plans and are hoping to snag a few grants to help speed the process along.

Walking through the village is a memorable experience. There’s long, long paths through thick woods. Cabins or shops are not located right next door to each other. It’s primitive and very real.
