YtN&tM #034

This week's show was a bit of a cheat... Every track has been harvested from a cassette released by the NME in 1988. The flavor of the show is to be found in the title of the cassette: Indie City, and is a lot of fun.
Most of these tracks would not usually be given the time of day on YtNtM, but for one week only, we'll make an exception. So don your Levis, national health specs and checked shirts, sit back and enjoy!
  1. James - Hymn From The Village
  2. The Three Johns - Death Of A European
  3. The Fire Engines - Candy Skin
  4. The Pogues - Dark Streets Of London
  5. The Mekons - Never Been In A Riot
  6. Gang Of Four - Armalite Rifle
  7. The Freshies - I'm In Love With The Girl On The Virgin Manchester Megastore Checkout Desk
  8. REM - Radio Free Europe
  9. Orange Juice - Blue Boy
  10. Aztec Camera - We Could Send Letters
  11. Josef K - Radio Drill Time
  12. Pop Will Eat Itself - Black Country Chain Saw Massacre
  13. The Primitives - Really Stupid
  14. House Of Love - Shine
  15. The Loft - Up The Hill And Down The Slope
  16. The Triffids - Wide Open Road
  17. The Smiths - Hand In Glove

Show #034: NME Indie City... Orange Juice, The Smiths, Josef K & more! Tape 2 features: The House of Love, The Loft, The Pogues, The Triffids, The Smiths, Robert Wyatt, ...And The Native Hipsters, The Cramps, REM, The Special AKA, Dead Kennedys, The Southern Death Cult, The Cult, The Primitives, Jonathan Richman, James, Pop Will Eat Itself, This Mortal Coil & New Order. None of the tracks on the set are rare, or obscure, but it was my favorite go-to mix-tape when I was bored with my usual selection of Goth, Post Punk, Electronic and Industrial tracks, and maybe that's why I chose to feature these songs in this week's show. Rest assured however, I'll be back next week with a playlist you would normally expect from YtN&tM!

Guest Mix

As I have gone "off topic" this week, I thought I'd share this mix from fellow Sine FM presenter Jon kelly of Orange Flavoured Pipe Machine. Lunar Bop Drop is Jon's monthly DJ night at The Mason's Arms in Doncaster. It's usually quite low key, but if you like your sounds smooth and soulful, with a smattering of old school ska, then you'll be in good company.

Videos

Here's a nice little documentary focussing on Edinburgh indie label Postcard: home to three bands featured on this week's show. It's a bit fuzzy, and the sound is terrible, but well worth watching.

This is a sound only playlist which features every track from the NME's C86 compilation released a couple of years before Indie City.

Post Script

This week's extra-curricular listening is at the bottom of the page...
