Should You Teach Young Outfielders to Step Back on All Fly Balls?

By Meachrm @BaseballBTYard

As I explain in today’s video post, a lot of youth coaches teach their outfielders to take a step back every time a ball is hit in the air towards them.  The reason is a sound one – Prevent extra bases even if you have to give up a few more singles in exchange.

As kids get older, however, a better game plan is needed so that they put themselves in a position to catch everything hit their way.  Giving the other team NO base hits is the goal.

Today’s video tip shows how to better accomplish that.  Introduce this concept early enough and you may not ever need to give the “take a step back” advice again.
