Should a Father Who Walked out Lose All His Rights?

Should a father who walked out loose all his rights?

Credit

An interesting question was raised on my mums group when a mom asked whether the father of her child had any rights at all as he had walked away when she was pregnant and the child now aged 5 has never met his dad.

The father is not on the birth certificate and the mom has raised her son as a single mom with no input emotionally nor financially by this man.

She questioned whether or not lets say if something major happened to her child, they were rushed to hospital for example, should she try to get in touch with this man to inform him?

What if she has no clue where this man now is after 5 years of no contact?

What if this man suddenly appeared at her door one day demanding to his son? What rights would she have? What should she do?

I am rather torn on this debate, as I feel very strongly about allowing a child the freedom to know both parents, despite the reasons, they should be allowed to know who they are and be encouraged to bond with both mom and dad.

But …

The father for 5 years has never accepted any form of responsibility towards this child. The child would be meeting a complete stranger.

What is the right answer if there is one at all?

What do you think? Should a father who walked out loose all his rights? Leave me a comment to let me know your views.
