India’s greatest freedom fighter, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, is a great personality of the country, at the age of 23, he sacrificed his life for his country. During the freedom struggle of India, Bhagat Singh was the youth icon for all the youth, who encouraged them to come forward for the country. Bhagat Singh was born in a Sikh family, since childhood, he had seen the British around him torturing Indians, due to which the matter of doing something for the country was in his mind at an early age. His thought was that the youth of the country can change the face of the country, so he tried to show a new direction to all the youth. The whole life of Bhagat Singh was full of struggle, the youth of today also take inspiration from his life.
Bhagat was born in a Sikh family, his father Kishan Singh was in jail at the time of his birth. Bhagat Singh had seen patriotism in his family since childhood, his uncle Ajit Singh was a great freedom fighter, who also formed the Indian Patriotic Association, in which Syed Haider Raza was with him. There were 22 cases registered against Ajit Singh, to escape from which he had to go to Iran. Bhagat’s father got him enrolled in Dayanand Anglo Vedic High School.
Bhagat Singh was deeply saddened by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 and openly supported the non-cooperation movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi. Bhagat Singh openly defied the British, and used to burn British books as told by Gandhiji. Gandhiji stopped the non-cooperation movement due to the violent activity in Chauri Chaura, after which Bhagat Singh was not happy with his decision and he thought of leaving Gandhiji’s non-violent talk and joining another party.
Bhagat Singh was doing BA from National College, Lahore, when he met Sukhdev Thapar, Bhagwati Charan and some others. The freedom struggle was in full swing at that time, in patriotism, Bhagat Singh left his college studies and jumped into the freedom struggle. During this time, his family members were contemplating his marriage. Bhagat Singh refused to marry and said, “If I marry before independence, my bride will die.”
Bhagat Singh used to participate in many plays in college, he was a very good actor. His plays, scripts were full of patriotism, in which he encouraged the youth of the college to come forward for independence, as well as humiliated the British. Bhagat Singh was a very cool man, he was also very fond of writing. In college, he also got many prices in the essay. Bhagat Singh first joined the Naujawan Bharat Sabha. When his family members assured him that they would no longer think of their marriage, Bhagat Singh returned to his home in Lahore. There he interacted with the people of Kirti Kisan Party, and started working for their magazine “Kirti”. He used to convey his message to the youth of the country through this, Bhagat ji was a very good writer, who also used to write for Punjabi Urdu paper, in 1926 Bhagat Singh was made the secretary in the Naujawan Bharat Sabha.
After this, in 1928, he joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), a fundamental party, which was formed by Chandrashekhar Azad. The entire party came together in India on 30 October 1928, opposing the Simon Commission, in which Lala Lajpat Rai was also with him. They stood at the Lahore railway station, shouting “Go back Simon”. After which there was a lathi charge, in which Lala ji was badly injured and then he died. Shocked by Lala ji’s death, Bhagat Singh and his party decided to take revenge on the British, and made a plan to kill Officer Scott, who was responsible for Lala ji’s death, but by mistake he killed Assistant Police Saunders. To save himself, Bhagat Singh immediately fled from Lahore, but the British government laid a trap all around to find him. Bhagat Singh cut his hair and beard to save himself, which is against his social religiosity. But at that time Bhagat Singh could not see anything in front of the country. Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Rajdev and Sukhdev had all met now, and they thought of making some big bang. Bhagat Singh used to say that the British have become deaf, they can hear loudly, for which a big bang is necessary. This time they decided that they would not run away like a weak one, but would hand themselves over to the police, so that the right message would reach the countrymen. In December 1929, Bhagat Singh, along with his partner Batukeshwar Dutt, detonated a bomb in the assembly hall of the British government, which was the only sound, which was thrown in the empty space. Along with this, he raised slogans of Inquilab Zindabad and distributed pamphlets. After this both of them got themselves arrested. Bhagat Singh himself used to call himself a martyr, after which it was added in front of his name. Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev were tried, after which they were sentenced to death, all three kept raising slogans of revolution zindabad in the court also. Bhagat Singh endured a lot of torture even while in jail, at that time Indian prisoners were not treated well, They did not get good food, no clothes. To improve the condition of the prisoners, Bhagat Singh also started a movement inside the jail, he neither drank water nor took a grain of food for several days to get his demand fulfilled. The British police used to beat him a lot, used to give various kinds of torture, due to which Bhagat Singh got upset and lost, but he did not give up till the end. In 1930, Bhagat ji wrote a book called Why I Am Atheist.
Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev were hanged on 23 March 1931. It is said that the date of hanging of the three was March 24, but at that time there were demonstrations all over the country for their release, due to which the British government was afraid that the decision should not be changed, due to which they held the midnight of 23 and 24. In itself, all three were hanged and also performed the last rites.

Due to not letting the sacrifice of Shaheed Bhagat Singh go in vain, every year his death date is celebrated as Martyr’s Day. On these days all the people of the country pay tribute to him.
