Sesame Street at the Van Gogh Museum

Famous children’s programme Sesame Street turned 35 in the Netherlands on 14 November. To celebrate, Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum threw a birthday party that included the unveiling of a very special puppet painting.

The Bedroom, one of Vincent van Gogh‘s most famous masterpieces, was re-designed especially for children to include a number of Sesame Street‘s most renowned characters. The new painting has Bert, Ernie, Elmo and Big Bird blended into the colourful theme of the painting – which is also a reflection of the bright mood of Van Gogh at the time.

The birthday work will be on show in the museum until the end of the month. But it is not the only celebratory addition to the museum. The exhibition is running in conjunction with a special children’s programme made possible with the help of Dutch Sesame Street actor Frank Groothof.

Groothof lends his lively vocals to a unique kid’s audio tour of the museum’s highlights. Tailored especially for a younger audience, the tour draws on the inspiration of Van Gogh’s huge collection of letters to traces the history of the artist’s best known paintings.

The Van Gogh Museum is already one one of the most famous in Amsterdam for adult visitors. Now, the museum is bringing its spectacular collection to the younger generations – a move that may inspire the world’s next great artist!
