September Elm in Nashville, Indiana was a bustling little shop.

This Brown County shop carried nothing but fair trade items!

What is fair trade and why is it important? In some parts of the world, there really aren’t opportunities to better yourself or to improve the life of your family.

So, organizations work with local artisans. These women may make baskets, jewelry, or pottery. They may craft clothing or decorative accents.

No matter what they may do, they get a chance to be more, and to find a new sense of self worth and independence. At September Elm, there are tables laden with handcrafted goods from around the world.

An entire section of scarves caught my eye! Beautifully done, the fabrics were soft and appealing.

I could have purchased one of each of these! I loved all of the prints. I enjoy knowing that items found here aren’t just going into some fat cat’s wallet and going toward the purchase of yet another vacation home or for the purchase of a private plane.

In many cases it is going to a family that will be able to put running water in their home or send a girl to school.

It’s a hand-up. I love that!

That is only a part of what makes September Elm special. The items here are truly wonderful and very well made!

Fair trade items included clothing and key chains, wall art and mirrors, handbags and purses, necklaces and rings, jugs and jars, coffee, and serving ware. Yes, I even missed a few! I love the pottery here. Plus, there were some owl things so you know I’m all about that.

When you have a gift, it is better to share it! That’s exactly what fair trade shops like September Elm let these international artisans do: share their talents with the world.

If you are interested in other “hand-up” kind of opportunities, please take a look at Heifer.org, Charity: Water, and Kiva, a loan program I learned about from Indiana author Mari Barnes that truly sounds awesome.
