Scientist Creates the Entire Continent of Antarctica in Minecraft

Posted on the 16 January 2015 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

The sandbox game Minecraft is more than just a video game for kids. So far, it has been used to recreate maps, fantasy worlds, iconic locations and many more. The latest to join this growing list of amazing creations is a 1:1000 scale Antarctica.

A glaciologist named Martin O’Leary from Swansea University is the man behind this creation, which he said to consist of over 3 billion blocks. Of course, he didn’t place those blocks by hand one at a time. He’s actually coded a Python script just for making this map, and used several other libraries and tools to bring the Antarctica to Minecraft.

“Most of my professional work is in numerical models of ice sheets, which often operate on square grids that look a lot like a Minecraft world,” O’Leary told Wired.
