Sasayama is an historic castle town.
In 1609, Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered the construction of a castle on a hill called Sasayama as the base for his offensive against rebels in Osaka Castle. Sasayama Castle fulfilled its purpose, and the castle town of Sasayama came to flourish as the main city of the Tanba region.
Even today, the much of the historical townscape is preserved and communicates the atmosphere of the castle town to the present day.

丹波篠山は、伝統的な城下町として知られ、篠山城を中心としてその周囲に広がる武家屋敷群、及び商家のまちなみは、伝統的建造物群保存地区に指定されています。
1609年（慶長14年）、徳川家康は、松平康重を常陸国笠間城から丹波国八上城に移し、さらに新城の築城を命じました。これは、山陰道の要衝である丹波篠山盆地に城を築くことによって、大坂の豊臣氏をはじめとする西国諸大名のおさえとするのが目的であったと言われています。
大坂城が落城し、防衛的役割を果たした後は、篠山の城下町は丹波地方の政治的、経済的中心都市として繁栄し、河原町商家群には、妻入りの商家が建ち並び、これらは５Ｍ～８Ｍ程度の狭い間口と、40Ｍ以上に渡る奥行きという独特の構造をしており、表構えは、かつては大戸と千本格子や荒格子または蔀（しとみ）で構成されていました。中二階の窓は出格子と太い格子をしっくいで塗り込めたむしこ窓であり、さらに袖壁、うだつも建造されました。
現在でも、その堂々たる街並みを素晴らしい保存状態で残しています。
