Sans Rival Bistro in Dumaguete

By Roamingcouple

It was quite ambitious of us to dare to make a review of each and every restaurant in Dumaguete. Like we said, we’ve been restaurant-hopping in Dumaguete for years now. There are only a few places to go in Dumaguete that would qualify as “tourist spots” like the Belfry Tower, Rizal Boulevard and Silliman University, however this formerly quaint and now bustling city is lined with a myriad of restaurants.

As residents 20 minutes away from Dumaguete downtown, it is pretty easy for us to dine here and there. We just either hop on our scooter or car and drive away, then 20 minutes later we’re there in the heart of the City.

We’ve started blogging in Feb. 1, so we are now starting to revisit each and every restaurant in Dumaguete city and make a review. We’ll feature now one of our dearest Restaurants in Dumaguete – Sans Rival Bistro!

The Exterior of Sans Rival Bistro

It looks like more like a house than a restaurant? Well, yes it used to be a residential place like most other establishments by the boulevard. We’ve provided another pic of how it used to be.

Owners

Well, we sat with Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbaria once when he visited Tanjay City (a nearby city some 34 kilometers away) for the anniversary of Scoobys (another food and convenience strore place that he owns) then we chatted for a while and we told him we’re regulars at Sans Rival Bistro. That put a smile on his face and he then gave us his calling card. He told us whenever we’re in Dumaguete to let him know right away. Of course, we felt shy about this and we were unable to contact him since then.

 Sans Rival Menu

There is a wide array of food to choose from with varied influences like french, italian, american and whatever else – sorry we’re not professional restaurant reviewers. But the nice thing about this restaurant is that the prices are affordable. We have posted all the pages of the Sans Rival menu for your perusal. Just view them below.

One of Our Many Dinners at Sans Rival Bistro

We visit Sans Rival at least twice a week. Our usual orders are Sizzling Tenderloin Steak – rare, Pork Spare ribs, a couple of Silvanas and Lemonade. Total is below 500 (as this tends to be the limit of our comfort zone)!

Actually, the moment we enter Sans Rival Bistro, the waitresses already know what we’re going to order. But sometimes, we also order other foods there just for the sake of trying them all out.

There are also days when alternate it with seafoods like Fish Almondine, Salmon Steak and a can of softdrinks – Coke Zero, just to prove otherwise that we aren’t creatures of habit.

Airconditioning is cool, ace service, beautiful interior design and a very homey feel – what more can you ask for?

“Steaking” in Dumaguete Price Comparison (or “Food for Thought”)

Le Chalet Tenderloin steaks – P450 (actually our favorite steak in Dumaguete is at Le Chalet. MooonCafe steaks (ala pobre) – P279. Don Atilano steaks P300+. Casablanca Steaks are P700+. Coco Amigos steaks are P300+. Sans Rival Bistro sizzling tenderloin steak: P245.

So, if you think about it, the steaks at Sans Rival is the cheapest among the best steaks and mashed potato food places in Dumaguete where we frequent. That way, if we are broke, then we could still go eat some steak. Thanks to Sans Rival Bistro for making that possible!

Turo-turo or Point-point (Ready to Eat)

For some reason, we haven’t really tried these. We’re not going to  say we’re creatures of habit because we do try out other foods. But we realized just now that we’re usually not in a hurry at all when we go to restaurants like Sans Rival. We’d go out when we are free and just want to unwind, so we don’t order these “Turo-turos”  and choose from the menu because we’re willing to wait; there’s no rush. Maybe next time we visit Sans Rival we will try them!

The Conference Room

We’ve had a few meetings inside the conference room in the past. Since the “husband” behind Roaming Couple dot com is also the President of the Rotary Club of Tanjay. The venue for the Councils of Presidents and Secretaries or COPS in short is in Sans Rival Bistro.
