There is nothing like that in Auckland but there are huge three-hundred-meter sand dunes in the very north. One can easily rent plastic boards with metallized bottom for almost no money and surf those dunes, like in showboarding. It is, of course, tiresom to climb them. And it is a little scaring to stand at the very top and look down, but other than that it is an absolutely childlike joy.
