Released on 6/7/12 80ms points
This weekend I got a chance to play through Mortal Legacies which is a JRPG.  This game will probably catch some players off guard to a certain degree.  That being said I actually enjoyed playing the game but I do have a few concerns.  The core game play consists of your main character going through the 2d world of Elisia and fulfilling quests which can range from fighting pirates on a ship to getting milk for a drunken sailor.  You also go through the game collecting allies to help you fight on your journey which I will touch on later.  The game has difficulty setting which is important and I recommend playing on a harder difficulty to get full enjoyment from this game because some of the easier difficulties will get boring quickly.
S&S; Indie Review: Mortal Legacies
So let’s start by going through the environment the game presents.  The game looks great and is what you would expect from a 2d JRPG. The music is fitting and the NPC’s have some funny things to say while you play. Even one of the guards says the classic “I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee” line from Skyrim.  You will also come to realize the world has a lot of open space, but I do wish that more of it was utilized for the actual quests.   When the game started I instantly thought of Pokemon because you start in your room and you talk to your mom and she wishes you a safe journey the typical Pokemon opening.  You go through quests that are often very simple and easy achievable then right when the game starts to have decently challenging and interesting quests the game ends abruptly.  You also don’t have your full team until the end of the game which is unfortunate because there could be some good strategies used in combat if the whole team was around longer.  I did enjoy the combat though because of the different approaches you can take.  Some characters do more damage or have a skill that can damage multiple enemies while others can use magic attacks or heal the team.  Some of the later battles can be challenging if some of the team members are eliminated but I feel a lot of the early game fighting is wasted on silly enemies like bees and snakes. The core combat mechanics are present but few enemies offer much resistance to your unrelenting force. S&S; Indie Review: Mortal Legacies   Overall I appreciated this game and I think that JRPG  fans should take a look at this game because it is a lot like some the well know titles.  I do believe that this game has a good combat system and a sizable world to explore. The world is made less interesting because of the short quest line and unused spaces. I do hope the any future Ivatrix games that are JRPG games have twice as many quests that utilize all available space because that is the only thing holding this game back from being a great indie game. Ultimately for 80ms points I would give the game a chance because while there are apparent issues it is still entertaining and a good glimpse at what Ivatrix can do in the future. 6/10 Entertaining game and I commend Ivatrix for their work.
