RV Plugged In But No Power? Here Is How To Troubleshoot And Fix It.

RV is your home, so it should be properly equipped. While RV is specially designed for leisure purposes so make sure you never compromise on anything that spoils your fun. Power failure is probably the most problematic thing when it comes to living in an RV. It should be resolved as soon as possible.

Imagine being your RV power plugged in but nothing turned on. Sitting in complete darkness with a refrigerator, air conditioner, and every appliance turned off and being stranded in the middle of a road is definitely not a fun trip. So, if there is a power failure, there are many things that you need to check.

There are many reasons why you are facing power failure issues; you need to check your power supply cables, batteries, main circuit, inverter, and breakers, of course. There could be a possible range of issues that why your RV is plugged in, but there is no power. If you are completely inexperienced, you better call an electricity expert.

There can be a basic or primary issue which would turn of selective appliances like refrigerator or television. There can be a bigger or secondary issue that would result in a complete power failure. But in both cases, do not try to resolve the issues yourself because electricity is always dangerous. Always opt for seeking a technician.

Recognizing the location of various devices

Being an RV owner, you should be aware of how various devices are connected in your RV. In most vehicles like it, the heavy appliances like the refrigerator and air conditioner are connected to the AC circuit, whereas the rest of the appliances like light, fans, and vents are connected through a DC circuit. You should be aware of the battery connections and which one to touch when some issue occurs.

Power supply cables

Remember that there could always be an issue with electrical wiring. Your RV power loss may be due to spark plugs or any other tear in power supply cables. Firstly, ensure that your wire is not broken or loose before pulling out any other connections. If your wire is worn off or broken, fixing the wire will bring your RV power supply back.


The next very important thing to check is your batteries. You must change your battery every three years if you are using your RV seasonally or occasionally. The average battery life is about three to four years. Before going on a long trip, make sure that your batteries are completely charged, and you should have an extra battery in handy.

Check that the batteries are properly connected, and none of the connections are loose. Check that your battery is not dead. In acid batteries, you much check if your battery is a leak. If it is the case, carefully remove the connections and fix a new battery. You will get your RV power supply working again.

Using the generators

If you have a generator, it is the best. In case if your batteries are not charged or they have some issue, you can turn on your generator and get RV power in no time. If your generator runs on gasoline or petrol, make sure that you have an adequate supply of it.

Breakers and fuses

Mostly there is a power failure when the breaker is turned off automatically. Fuses and breakers are designed in such a way that whenever there is some electricity issue, they get turned off automatically so that the overall power supply is cut down to avoid permanently damaging your electrical appliances.

So, check that your breaker is not turned off. If it is, simply turn it on again, and you can have your RV power supply back instantly. There can also be a problem with your main circuit. You may have a loose wire, or it is quite possible that you have forgotten to turn it on before leaving the house.

What if the RV is kept plugged in forever?

To avoid all such RV power failure problems, you can simply keep your RV plugged in all the time. But you must keep a check on your batteries that they do not lack water or charge. Keep charging your batteries every now and then, and keep turning all the devices on and off to check that your RV power system works.
