Italians live with many rituals
One of these rituals in Modena, is going to the Bar Schiavoni outside of the famous covered market, il Mercato Albinelli, in the city centre on Christmas Eve.
The Bar, famous for its delicious (and costly) luxury “panini” sandwiches, hires a band each December 24th to play outside.
A crowd gathers for a pre-lunch aperitivo of sparkling white wine and fresh salty snacks bought at the market. The market is open on Christmas Eve until 2:30 p.m., so it’s the perfect chance to grab your last minute groceries for Christmas dinner, meet your friends and have some wine while you rock out.

I love finding myself in the middle of something that turns out to be more important than I thought. In this case, this Christmas Eve tradition is widespread amongst Modena’s coolest, and my, the man and the toddler happen to be here. We ran into our friends who offered us a drink and caught up. It was the perfect way to spend Christmas Eve afternoon, followed by a dinner with the family.

I’ve done a whole other post about my amazingly spiffy new hat by Federica Moretti Handmade. I received it as a Christmas present, even though it was opened on the morning of the 24th.
My husband is no better at giving gifts than I am!
