There is a lot that I love about this time of year. Football, cooler days, holidays coming up…The only things I can think of that I don’t like about this time of year are fruit flies and horror movies.
I dislike scary movies with a passion…but I might hate fruit flies more. They always find their way into my home, and it’s probably due to a few different factors.
I am constantly cooking or preparing food, which means that food is almost always out. I have things brewing and fermenting which attracts them, and there seem to be little bits of half eaten fruit or drips of milk here and there thanks to my little kiddos.
It also doesn’t help when one of us leaves a banana peel laying out overnight, which is what caused our latest infestation.
I’ve tried all sorts of tricks to get rid of them, from creating elaborate funnel traps, to standing guard in my kitchen with the vacuum on, ready to suck the nasty creatures up.
Nothing worked that well until I discovered the soapy water trick. It’s amazing. It works the best of anything I have tried and it’s got to be the easiest method.
Put a few drops of dish soap in a bowl, fill with fast running water so that it creates a good amount of thick bubbles.
Then, add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
Boom
I guarantee, within a few minutes you will start attracting the majority of the flying pests into the bubbles, which instantly traps and kills them.
I leave a bowl out on the counter during the day and make a new one before bed to leave under a light in the kitchen, which helps to attract them even more.
This is a super effective remedy for moths as well, and I’ve even caught a regular fly in there…awesome.
Hope this helps!
live well. be well.
