Time for the weekly Friday Banger, because for some folk, the weekend just wouldn't be the weekend without a bit of "big fish, little fish, cardboard box". Today's selection is an acid house classic, perhaps the record that started it all. But this version differs significantly from the one that most people will know. For a start it's shorter, more varied and noticeably faster than the pumping original. Some people would crucify me for saying this, but I prefer this breakbeat-techno flavoured 'Plump DJs Edit' of Phuture's forceful 'Acid Trax', which can be found on Justin Robertson's superb compilation 'The Art Of Acid' from 2008. Plump DJs (Lee Rous and Andy Gardner) are a London based DJ and producer team, considered to be pioneers of the breakbeat genre in the late 90's. Meanwhile, Phuture are a Chicago-based act founded in 1985 by Spanky, DJ Pierre and Herb J. Their 12-minute 'Acid Tracks' from 1987 is one of several recordings that lay claim to being the first-ever acid house record, characterised by plenty of tasty bass from the Roland TB-303 synthesizer...
