REWIND: Melvin Davis - 'Chains Of Love'A classic slice of Detroit soul with an irresistible backbeat. I first heard this excellent song in a most unlikely place, when it was featured on a compilation that came free with Kerrang magazine about 13 years ago. It wasn't this brilliant original that was included on 'Hometaping Vol 1' (compiled and chosen by The Hives) but a cover version by a group called The Dirtbombs. It wasn't until last year that I finally got round to hearing the superb Melvin Davis original after it was played on Jimjam Wigwam's top class Frome FM radio show. More details about that can be found HEREwww.allmusic.com writes that "Melvin Davis never scored the crossover hit that would have made him a star, but few artists on Detroit's soul music scene had a more impressive résumé than Davis, a singer, songwriter, drummer, and bandleader who worked with everyone from Smokey Robinson and David Ruffin to Wayne Kramer and Dennis Coffey..."
