Goodreads / Amazon Secrets of the sea have never been sexier than this.
Ever since the death of her parents, Miranda has lived on Whym Island, taking comfort in the local folklore, which claims a mysterious sea witch controls the fate of all on the island and in its surrounding waters. Sometimes it’s just easier to believe things are out of your control.
But then a terrible boating accident takes the lives of several of her friends, and Miranda is rescued by a mysterious boy who haunts her dreams. Consumed by guilt from the accident, she finds refuge in late-night swims—and meets Christian, a boy who seems eerily familiar, but who is full of mystery: He won’t tell her where he is from, or why they can only meet at the beach. But Miranda falls for him anyway…and discovers that Christian’s secrets, though meant to protect her, may bring her nothing but harm.
Seductive and compelling, Wrecked brings a contemporary, paranormal twist to a classic enchanting tale.
Miranda is probably the best thing out of this novel. Her pain she feels is real, after dealing with the death of her parents, the death of four of her friends, and the fact that her boyfriend is in a coma. She lost all her friends, but she's slowly finding ways to cope. She was in a tough position, and I loved how Anna Davies portrayed that pain for Miranda. Miranda's relationship with her little brother, Teddy was a good touch too. Out of all the characters in the novel, Teddy was probably one of my favorites.
The first half of the novel was surprisingly very good - but that could be due to the fact that it had more of a contemporary feel. We got to experience the accident and what happened, how Miranda dealt with her parents death, her friend's death, and her grandmother, Eleanor. Her journey returning back to school was a good addition as well - except for the fact that Miranda was extremely passive when people were rude to her and she doesn't seem like the person that would just let people poke fun at her when she was in that much pain.
Miranda's relationship with Christian is weird. He saved her after the boating accident that killed her friends, then a month later he shows up. They talk to each other for a night, and they're already flirting with each other, even though she knows literally NOTHING about him. The next night, they're already kissing! A few days later, they're saying they're in love! It was a little unbelievable, and to be honest I thought I was going to really like this novel, until the romance kicked in. Then it just went downhill. I think the reason it was just bad was because it didn't start until halfway through the novel, so it seemed EXTREMELY rushed.
Pretty much all of the characters in this novel are very nonchalant about everything. Christian takes a few minutes pondering whether he should tell Miranda about him being a mermaid type thing. After that, Miranda doesn't even think twice about telling her brother about it!
This will be the last of my bad things to say, I promise: the novel was very predictable. I knew what was going to happen in the end and who was the mysterious 'Sephie.' It was easy to tell what was going on in the second half of the book.
This was my second mermaid novel, and for the first half I thought this was going to turn out very good - I was planning on giving it 4 out of 5 stars! Then the romance kicked in and it just didn't appeal to me anymore...
