“Gone Girl meets Pretty Little Liars in the first book of this fast-paced psychological thriller series full of delicious twists and turns.
Friendship. Obsession. Deception. Love.
Kalah knows better than to fall for Beth Taylor . . . but that doesn’t stop her from falling hard and falling fast, heart first into a sea of complications.
Then Beth vanishes. She skips town on her eighteenth birthday, leaving behind a flurry of rumors and a string of broken hearts. Not even Beth’s best friend, Britney, knows where she went. Beth didn’t even tell Kalah good-bye.
One of the rumors links Beth to Britney’s boyfriend, and Kalah doesn’t want to believe the betrayal. But Brit clearly believes it—and before Kalah can sort out the truth, Britney is dead.
When Beth finally reaches out to Kalah in the wake of Brit’s suicide, Kalah wants to trust what Beth tells her. But she’s swiftly realizing that nothing here is as it seems. Kalah’s caught in the middle of a deadly psychological game, and only she can untangle the deceptions and lies to reveal the unthinkable truth.”
Oh my GOSH. This book was just SPECTACULAR. I loved the suspense and mystery that were thrown throughout the book. If you’re going to read Vanished (which I highly recommend) I would read it during the night when everyone else in your house is asleep because that way, you’ll be able to FEEL ALL THE FEELS. I read the 2nd half of the book until 3am and it just gave me the creeps.
I really liked the main character, Kalah. She has anxiety and OCD and I really do feel for her. I get really anxious too but not to the point where I start imagining worse case scenarios of someone, in this case our main character does. I think the fact that she worries a lot and starts imagining awful things makes her an unreliable narrator which added more suspense.
At first I didn’t like how everything revolved around Beth and Britney, but that made their character mysterious so I was very intrigued! I was curious about the secrets they kept to each other, and why people centered around them so much even before they both disappeared.
This book also screams out DIVERSITY. Kalah and Beth has a thing but unfortunately, Kalah has a boyfriend so there IS cheating involved. I really feel bad for Kalah’s boyfriend, Zach, because he has been nothing but supportive to her.
I also love how this book is not only about friendship, but it’s also about family. It was so sad how Britney’s parents only cares about themselves. However, I do like Kalah’s relationship with her family. They always try to cheer her up, and are very supportive.
Overall I recommend this to everyone who likes mystery and suspense. The beginning was a bit slow though, but I promise you it picks up especially towards the second half of the story.
