My thoughts:
I like this series because it is a unique series. There are some series like this, but not a lot about about a monk solving murder mysteries. I love how it is so different and this book really tends to stay in character and it is rich in historical detail. Charles du Luc is wonderful character that Rock should be proud of creating. I have read all of the other books in this series and tend to enjoy them. This one seemed to me a little unlike the others and a little predictable. I think I enjoyed the other books in this series better. Nevertheless, it still is a good series, if you like historical mysteries that are a little different than the norm.
A person from Charles' past has decided to join his Jesuit order and he is concerned because this person knows a secret that Charles has been trying to hide from. He sees a lot of himself in this new novice and takes him under his wing. When Charles and another priest go to a crypt, they find a dead body and soon things are spiraling out of control. Monks start missing and Charles is attacked and a libelous book about the Jesuit order is soon circulating in the area stirring up unrest amongst the citizens of Paris.
Charles can't help himself and he starts to investigate the murder and the spew of crimes. The Jesuit order asks that he not investigate as he keeps drawing undue attention to himself and to the religious order. However, the king soon gets involved and orders Charles to help with the investigation. I liked this book and enjoyed it, but I didn't feel that it was along the par as the other books in this series. I am hoping that the next one is better than this one and that the series returns to its former glory.
