'From the ashes of war rise the secrets of its darkest hearts...
In the wake of the Battle of Waterloo, Paris is a house divided. The triumphant Bourbons flaunt their victory with lavish parties, while Bonapartists seek revenge only to be captured and executed. Amid the turmoil, British attache and Intelligence Agent Malcolm Rannoch and his wife, Suzanne, discover that his murdered half-sister, Princess Tatiana Kirsanova, may have borne a child--a secret she took to the grave. And Malcolm suspects there was more than mere impropriety behind her silence...
As Malcolm and Suzanne begin searching for answers, they learn that the child was just one of many secrets Tatiana had been keeping. The princess was the toast of Paris when she arrived in the glamorous city, flirting her way into the arms of more than a few men--perhaps even those of Napoleon himself--and the father must be among them. But in the melee of the Napoleonic Wars, she was caught up in a deadly game, and now Malcolm and Suzanne must race against time to save the child from a similar fate...'
My thoughts:
I absolutely adore this series and simply cannot get enough. I need Teresa Grant to write these faster as they are so good and don't compare to a lot of the other books out there. Suzanne and Malcolm have become very near and dear characters to my heart and I can't wait to see what is in store for them next. I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did its predecessor, Imperial Scandal, but it still was a good read. This one had its plentiful twists and turns in the storyline, but for some reason it didn't wow me as much as Imperial Scandal did. I was literally on the edge of my seat with that one and this one seemed a little more tamed and mild compared to the other.
This story focuses more on the past of Suzanne and Malcolm and the mysterious element surrounding Malcolm's half-sister, Princess Tatiana Kirsanova. The Princess makes an appearance in the first book in this series, Vienna Waltz, and this story continues somewhat with the same story line if somewhat a little different. Tatiana gave birth to a child, and Malcolm feels that he has a sense of duty to protect her child and he does what he has to make sure that the child is safe and free from harm. Suzanne has to deal with her conflicting feelings of being a mother, wife and spy and it is a story that shows development amongst the characters together and individually.
Teresa Grant has a knack for writing historical thrillers that involve endearing characters that leave you wanting more. I am a devoted fan of this series as long as she keeps writing. I would prefer that the next book leave me sitting on the edge of my seat more so than this one did, but still a wonderful addition to an already fabulous series. If you have not read this series yet, I highly encourage you to do so as it mixes intrigue, historical events, romance and suspense all into one fantastic, highly amusing tale.
