Goodreads / Amazon Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is
Everyone I know has fell in love with Jennifer L. Armentrout's characters and writing, so I knew I had to get in on this wonderful book. After watching the recently released trailer, I was so intrigued, and thankfully Henrietta from Leisure Reads send me a copy for my Kindle! I read this as a part of the read-a-thon, and read the whole book at the beach.
When it comes down to it, Katy's character reminds me a lot of myself. I do not have a parent that passed away, or a mother that's trying to get me to make friends - but I do have a blog, I do have other weird hobbies, and I occasionally get swooned by a hot guy. Okay, maybe that's for a lot of people in the blogging world, but I still feel like I actually connected with Katy. Her frustration with Damon, and her want for a friendship with Dee seemed so real to me.
Damon. Ugh, so frustrating. But at the same time he was so adorable. When he let his guard down around Katy and actually showed his true feelings, it was so sweet. But then he'd turn right around and be a fricken loser and mean. UGH! But I still love him, because he's so protective and he's super sweet sometimes. And honestly, who doesn't like a guy with a little sass?
The one thing that I really liked about this book, besides the characters, was the fact that Katy was a book blogger. In the beginning, they made mentions of Katy having a blog, but I didn't know what type of blog it was. Once she mentioned a "Waiting on Wednesday" post, I fell even more in love. Jennifer L. Armentrout really knows how to make book bloggers feel awesome. I felt I could connect even more with Katy, even if I didn't have a love/hate relationship with a hot alien.
The plot for this novel was a bit lacking, because I feel it focused so much on Damon and Katy fighting and then getting along, and then fighting again and getting along. I wish there was more about the aliens! Also, it seemed like it took forever for Katy to learn that Damon and Dee were a different species! It was clear they weren't human, and Katy had her suspicions, which was great. But she'd ask a question, and Damon or Dee wouldn't answer it, and then she'd just forget about the whole matter. If I were Katy I would have pressured them into telling me, and if Katy would have done that it would have made the novel move a little faster. Instead, the first few chapters were filled with sexual frustration with Damon and a budding friendship with Dee.
I really enjoyed this novel, just as I expected! The characters were just great for the type of novel this is, and I seriously cannot wait for Onyx! I'm happy that there's four more books after this one and even a prequel! Jennifer L. Armentrout created an awesome novel, and I can't wait to read some of her other work!
