Review: Mimi Jean Pamfiloff's Accidentally ... Over? is a Fun Romp

Review: Mimi Jean Pamfiloff's Accidentally ... Over? is a fun rompI won't say I've been counting the days for the release of Mimi Jean Pamfiloff's ACCIDENTALLY ... OVER?, because that might mean I was looking forward to the final book in her Accidentally Yours series.
However, I was really looking forward to Máax's story. Yes, I really dig the idea of an invisible Mayan god of truth. I. Do. Especially when he's seven feet tall and built. Proportional in all things. Really.
If you're not familiar with this series, it's about Mayan gods, vampires, and assorted otherworldly beings who tend to stave off wars and famines and help out humanity - and seemingly bicker endlessly among themselves. They also have a tendency to fall in love with humans - finding their soul mates. There's one or two wicked (or wickedly good) deities. Topping the list is Cimil (see Accidentally Cimil for hers and Roberto's story).
Máax was well worth the wait. The other gods think of him as the bad boy as he's constantly breaking the rules. Hopping back and forth in time - no Tardis needed. It seems like he may have good reason for coloring outside the lines, but he's still being punished by not being visible. Now that isn't quite the handicap you might think as when I read his words I kept imagining the most amazingly sexy deep voice speaking. Yep, a voice is sometimes all you need for chills and thrills.
In order to save the planet and the gods from destruction, Máax has been sent back twenty years to make sure Ashli Rosewood doesn't die. A seemingly easy task that's complicated by Máax's unusual attraction for Ashli as well as her unheralded attraction for death. Yes, Ashli seems fated to die and if she does the world will end. How do we know? Cimil said so.
I really found the story for the most part fun - and one hundred percent crazy (well the Cimil percent). My only hesitance in absolutely loving this book is the heroine Ashli. She got on my nerves, well her whining did.
I know, it's not fun to the be object of the grim reaper's desire, but Ashli almost made me want the grim reaper to succeed so Máax could find someone a little less caught up with herself. Sure, her parents both died and she's living in their house and running their cafe/coffeeshop, so I should emphasize right? But I was actually looking for the proverbial ear plugs half the time when I was reading her dialog and just couldn't understand Máax's attraction to her. Why? Because a little Ashli went a very long way. It never got to the point where I stopped reading, but I did stop really digging the story and kept reading more to find out what happened than because I was really caught up with the Máax and Ashli romance.
Yes, this is a wild and crazy book and Cimil is front and center in a lot of that over-the-top slapstick. And a lot of it is funny. But there are quite a few story threads that I never quite understood, including the animosity/jealousy of one of Ashli's bodyguards.
So, would I recommend ACCIDENTALLY...OVER? Definitely for fans of the Accidentally Yours series. You cannot not read this. But it's definitely not a stand-alone title and it's not my favorite of the series. Even though Máax is uber hot, his hotness is tempered by Ashli's whines. Although by the end I finally understood her a bit more, it was too little and too late for this reader. So, for me, Accidentally Yours wrapped up not with fireworks, but with sparklers. Still enjoyable in many ways, but just not the big bang I was anticipating.
The good news for Accidentally Yours fans is that it's clear at the end that although this series might be over that Mimi Jean Pamfiloff will be continuing to spin out the meeting of Mayan gods and humans for little while in her new series, Immortal Matchmaker. I'm looking forward to reading those. So maybe it's not over - over after all.

When it comes to Máax, the God of Truth who refuses to follow the rules, there's more to him than meets the eye. Literally. Because Maáx is invisible! Which is probably why, after seventy-thousand years, he's still unable to find a mate.
Ashli Rosewood was never meant to die. In fact, her death might be the very reason the gods are now faced with stopping that pesky doomsday right around the corner. If only there was a way to undo the past.
Cue Máax. Seven feet of divine masculinity and the unruly god charged with saving Ashli. With a little help from an ancient Mayan tablet, Máax will travel back in time and set things right.
Easy, right?
Wrong.
Because Máax has one teensy challenge. He's invisible. And every time this impatient, powerful deity gets anywhere near Ashli, he spooks her right into harm's way. Meaning...she dies, and he has to start all over again.
Cliff, banana peel, runaway storage container filled with Belgian chocolates, bee sting, the list goes on and on. Does the Universe have it out for this girl? Sure seems that way. But why? And what will Máax do when he begins to suspect that not only is Ashli the key to stopping the apocalypse, but she may be "the one" he's been waiting seventy-thousand years for.
How will he save the one woman the Universe insists on killing and who wants nothing to do with him?
