My thoughts:
I can't really go into much detail about the storyline of this book as it would be full of spoilers and I don't want to ruin the Outlander series for anyone as it is beautiful in its own right. Let's just say that the story picks up pretty much where Outlander left us and engages the reader from the first page. Gabaldon has a gift for storytelling that is unlike any other. You find yourself wrapped up in the story and feeling like the characters are your own family members. It takes a special kind of writer to make the reader feel so intense about the story and Gabaldon does so with ease.
I highly recommend that you read the Outlander series in order. It is pretty much required to be read in order. If you don't, you will be so lost. The books build upon each other and Gabaldon doesn't seem to see the need to hash back over what has already happened. The only thing that I don't really care for about these books is the overwhelming size of them. They are door stopper size books and take some time to read them. This latest one took me five days. I don't mind taking the time to read them as they are really good, it's just that sometimes the amount of reading can be overwhelming. The story clearly makes up for that though. Another fabulous read and I am going to be starting the next in the series, Voyager, right away and I can hardly wait.
