While some of us may have considered the possibility of Victoria and Charlotte actually dying about as likely as Emily showing up in sweats to a Hamptons soiree, there were other cliffhangers from Revenge's season 1 finale that did leave us craving answers all summer long.
For example, is Amanda really carrying Jack's baby? Is the White-haired Man truly vanquished? How can Victoria protect herself and Charlotte against Conrad's evil ways? And when will that whining douchebag Declan be written off the show?
The biggest questions of all revolve around Emily's now-revealed-to-be-alive mother. How is this possible, what does it mean, and how will it effect Em's revengenda?
Let's suss out the main issues brought up by the Season 2 premiere....
Spoilers ahead!
Emily has naturally spent the summer trying to dredge up memories of her mom from her subconscious mind, along with honing her physical prowess (if only her adorable face and cute little voice didn't interfere with how threatening she can seem - or maybe that's the point, since it reinforces our knowledge of her basic goodness).
While hanging with Takeda (but, like, why? We all know he seems mad duplicitous, though we don't know exactly what he's been up to. I mean, he "read Amanda in"? What? Huh?), Emily resorts to Jedi-like tactics of deep meditation, only to be interrupted from her peacefully bound oceanic submersion by Takeda's pal, Mysterious Hottie. Clearly, Em and Mysterious Hottie have a history, and our heroine is none too pleased with his interferences.Look, people, I don't need any new guy coming in and getting in the way of Emily/Jack. Don't we already have enough obstacles in this area?
Finally having had enough of these overseas shenanigans, Emily returns homeward to the waiting bestie-ness of Nolan, who has been working out like crazy in case he ever gets attacked again. Moreover, he sold his house due to this same paranoia, and has to move in with Emily (amazing!!).
I suspect these two are really brother and sister, so I hope all those "Nemily" shippers don't get too attached. Everything about their bond is so familial feeling, down to their mutual father/father figure (?) and Emily's instinctual trust in Nolan. Hell, they actually seem like twins with their similar blondie appearances. But we'll see.
While Emily and Nolan begin investigating her mother's wacky past and the Graysons' apparent involvement in her institutionalization and "death," poor Jack is stuck with the aftermath of Amanda's baby mama-ness. He totes doesn't believe he's in love with Mandy anymore because he's realized since the night Sammy died (meeeehhhh!!!) that he loves Emily.
I still hate the way this plotline requires us to resent Amanda (as I discussed here), but the truth is I still feel sorry for that curly-locked, murderous stripper little cutie-pie. She seems so insanely dependent on her false identity for everything she wants out of life that it's just pathetic. We all keep waiting for Amanda to turn into a steely, cruel creature, but she actually remains unblinkingly loyal to Emily, like she just can't help it.
Anyway, we get a heartbreaking scene of Emily/Jack angst, which hopefully indicates that these two will spend the season trying to get back to each other.
Declan spends the whole episode whining at Jack, because that's what Declan does.
The victim of Declan's stupidity, Charlotte, is being held captive in rehab so thatConrad can cheat her out of her inheritance. Interestingly, Char seems to instinctively trust Emily, whom she informs secretly that Victoria is "shock" still alive. Emily goes to see Vicky, and even though they still hate each other, the air feels oddly sucked out of their rivalry now that Emily is not engaged to Daniel. Obviously, Victoria still did all kinds of terrible things to Emily's family, and Emily's never going to let that go. But Victoria's attempted a certain level of redemption. It will be interesting to see where their relationship goes now.
Btdubs, I enjoyed the opening credits' omission of Madeleine Stowe's name. It didn't fool me, but it also didn't insult my intelligence by including her name and then expecting me to wonder if she was really dead for twenty minutes.
So, ummm...how and why is White-haired Man working with Vicky? Perhaps just because he hates Conrad that much? Can't blame him, if so.
Daniel seems completely pointless as a character now, so I suggest they have him go full evil ASAP. And seems to me Ashley's probably banging both Grayson men and playing them off of each other. What a ho!
Jennifer Jason Leigh's Kara seems to be the character on whom the biggest mysteries now pivot. That said, what's up with Jack's boat, the ridiculously named The Amanda, being sunk in a few months time?
The showrunners used to claim that eventually the show would not be about Emily's revenge, but other character(s)' revenge. Yet with the most recent developments, I wonder if we are going to keep seeing the disease of Emily's vengefulness spread to all of the other characters. Either way, it's exciting to have a whole new season of adventures ahead of us on Revenge.
