Retro American Treats – My New Favourite: the Sno-kone!

By Cassiefairy @Cassiefairy

On a (British) holiday earlier this month, I had my first ever Sno-kone! And it has quickly become my new favorite.

I found this classic American treat in a retro sweet shop called The Sweet Hut in the seaside town of Felixstowe in Suffolk. It’s the kind of kooky shop where you can buy unusual flavours of Coca-c0la & Fanta, coconut & peanut-butter M&Ms, Wonka chocolate, Root Beer and all kinds of traditional sweets weighed out from big jars. And luckily for me, a Sno-Kone machine!

I’ve never had a Sno-Kone before but I’m a massive fan of Slush Puppies. Yes, I’ve never really grown out of ice drinks with sickly syrup - although I’ve discovered that my local bowling alley does an alco-slushy - genuine Slush Puppy with a shot of spirit – and my favorite is Archers & blue slush. I’ve even found out how to recreate a slushy at home – buy some Kool-Aid from any nearby American goodies shop and pour over ice that I’ve crushed in my blender – yum! Anyway, I didn’t think that a Slush Puppy could be beaten, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try out a Sno-Kone for the first time ever.

So I chose the most “Cassiefairy” one from the vast menu of flavours – a bright pink ice cone made with neon syrup that tasted of bubblegum and candy floss. I watched it being made, much the same way that you’d compact snow to create a snowball and when I saw the tiiiiny quantity of syrup being poured on top I was certain that I’d be left with a weak watery mush in the bottom of my cone.
