Hailing from Athens, Georgia, and now LA based, electrorock-pop oufit Reptar have released their new single “Sebastian” from their debut Body Faucet, following a lengthy collaboration between Vagrant Records and veteran producer Ben Allen. The song expertly splices together a plethora of fun, industrialized videogame pop, a Bladerunner-esque opening and a bouncy, disjointed Kooks chorus. This bizarre combination of tunes is blended elegantly throughout the song, which begins in the ambient Brian Eno realms of dystopian soundtracks, only to be picked up, shaken off, and doused in a melodic indie-pop chorus.
The song’s navigation between fundamentally different aspects of sound bring disjointed, unpredictable and fun elements to their music. It infuses a sound that would otherwise simply be similar to The Kooks with perilous joy and optimistic dreaming. The wonderful aspect of this music, this song, and potentially this album, is the great sincerity we can hear falling throughout Reptar’s “Sebestian”.
