The Red Spider Mite, or Red Spiders Mite, is just another name for the typical mite found in your garden or grow room. Adding “Red” is something that many gardeners do mistakenly due to the color of the body. This is mistaken, because depending on the stage of a mites life they may be different colors. Ranging from Green to Spotted to Red and Brown. Some have even said Black.
There is however, a European Red Spider Mite, or Panonychus ulmi, is a MAJOR pest to orchard owners around the world. This Species apparently does the same thing as they do to us. Suck the juices from the plant leaving it sickly and yellow, filled with webbing.
Weather your mites have two spots or are green with pink zebra stripes, you should ATTACK THEM!
To tell if you even have mites, you should look under the leaves of you plants with a magnifying glass or a Lighted Mini Microscope.
- Look for badly damaged leaf
- Examine leaf with Magnifying Glass.
- Do you see any bugs?
- Eggs?
Ok if you do have bugs and you are unsure if they are red spider mites or aphids or thrips you should spidermitehq.com.
I have heard it in many growning communities, “Oh, you have SPOTTED mites, those aren’t bad. You should only worry if they are ……” This is ridiculousness.
Remember to hit you plants with a Spray weekly so you never get mites to begin with. If you keep up a cycled regiment you will NEVER get mites, unless you bring them in. Cycled meaning the grower is going to want to used a different chemical with a different mode of action at least every other spraying. If you are using organic methods of aphid or Panonychus ulmi should not face any problems with resistance build-up.
Red Spider mites don’t build up a resistance to organics due to the fact that they have EVOLVED to dislike these products such as, tobacco, peper flakes, extracts, soaps etc. The beauty of organic spider mite killing is that they WON’T build up any form of tolerance. They haven’t in the last million years or so, why would next week be any different.
By hitting you mite or aphid problem as hard and as quick as possible you will minimize any chance that these little devils will destroy you precious plants. All it takes is one week and mites can really set in.
