Realizing Resonance’s Top 10 Songs About Time

By Realizingresonance @RealizResonance

Given that the theme of the month is the Philosophy of Time, I thought it would be fun to list Realizing Resonance’s Top 10 Songs about Time. I have also included some lyrical snippets that illustrate the philosophical draw of these 10 great tracks.

#10: “Child in Time” by Deep Purple

Sweet child in time, you’ll see the line

Line that’s drawn between the Good and the Bad

See the blind man, he’s shooting at the world

Bullets flying, ooh taking toll

If you’ve been bad - Oh Lord I bet you have

And you’ve not been hit oh by flying lead

You’d better close your eyes, you’d better bow your head

Wait for the ricochet

#9: “The Longest Time” by Billy Joel

If you said goodbye to me tonight

There would still be music left to write

What else could I do

I’m so inspired by you

That hasn’t happened for the longest time

#8: “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick

And think of you

Caught up in circles confusion

Is nothing new

Flashback warm nights

Almost left behind

Suitcase of memories

Time after

Sometimes you picture me

I’m walking too far ahead

You’re calling to me, I can’t hear

What you said

Then you say go slow

I fall behind

The second hand unwinds

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me

Time after time

If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting

Time after time

#7: “Caught Somewhere in Time” by Iron Maiden

If you had the time to lose

An open mind and time to choose

Would you care to take a look

Or can you read me like a book

Time is always on my side

Time is always on my side

Can I tempt you, come with me

Be Devil may care fulfill your dream

If I said I’d take you there

Would you go, would you be scared

Time is always on my side

Time is always on my side

Don’t be afraid, you’re safe with me

Safe as any soul could be…Honestly

Just let yourself go

Caught somewhere in time

Caught somewhere in time

Caught somewhere in time

#6: “Whisper in Time” by Bad Religion

All those stories that my dad told me

They are just a whisper in time

All those things that never came to be

They are just a whisper in time

A whisper in time, a whisper in time

Things that I can’t shake from my mind

A whisper in time, a whisper in time

Moments that just flicker and die

All those places I wanted to go

They are just a whisper in time

All those friends who now I do not know

They are just a whisper in time

Maps and roads that brought me here today

They are just a whisper in time

Circumstances that were explained away

They are just a whisper in time

Because we are messengers of memory

Just whispers in time

#5: “Essence of Time” by isa (my old band with my bro Devin Roberts)

Words of wisdom

Cloaked in love but meaningless

Don’t wish for what you can’t have

When time and love don’t coalesce

But time is of the essence

And the essence is loaded up

With violent words in passages

Where do we go from here

All this time is floating away

Where do we go from here

All my love is floating away

It’s always the same

Time is of the essence

And the essence is fading away

Stuck in this atmosphere of worry

Oh it carries on

I swear its hard to breathe

Oh everything is still and waiting for to come around

Day after day it’s all the same

#4: “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” by Green Day

Another turning point

A fork stuck in the road

Time grabs you by the wrist

Directs you where to go

So make the best of this test

And don’t ask why

It’s not a question

But a lesson learned in time

It’s something unpredictable

But in the end it’s right

I hope you had the time of your life

#3: “Somewhere in Time” by Savatage

So what can I tell you

If life’s the length of this play

Perhaps God gave the answers

To those with nothing to say

The years are forgiven

If God’s forgiving and kind

Perhaps we’ll all find the answers

Somewhere in time

Somewhere in time

I’ve been changing

Redefining

All the things I thought I knew

So long ago

When I was flying

Through the years that seem so far away

In the back of a reason

In the back of my mind

Where I’ve piled up the seasons

That I’ve traded for time

I’ve been grasping at rainbows

Hanging on till the end

But the rain is so real lord

And the rainbows pretend

The rainbows pretend

#2: “Got the Time” by Anthrax

If I, Tell Ya What I’m Doing Today

Will You, Shut up and Get out of My Way

Someone Ask Me What the Time Is, I Don’t Know

Only Know I Gotta Go Now

No Time, Tryin’ Ta Get a Watch Repaired

No Time, Never Got a Thing to Wear

Little Ringin’ on the Telephone

Oh No, Hear a Ringin’ in My Head Now

No Such Thing as Tomorrow

All We Want

Two, Three, Go!

Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin’ in My Head

Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin’ in My Head

Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin’ in My Head

Tickin’ in My Head, Tickin’ in My Head, Tickin’ in My Head

#1: “Time” by Pink Floyd

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain

And you are young and life is long and there is time to kill today

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say
