After lusting over the Real Techniques Bold Metals Makeup Brushes from afar, I finally own the whole set and have given them a really good test to let you know which of the 7 brushes are worth splurging on!
With a makeup brush collection consisting of nearly all of the Real Techniques brushes available, you could say that I’m a huge fan of the brand! The founders, Sam and Nic Chapman (who run the YouTube channel channel) are immensely talented and have been MUA’s for decades, which is why their products are always of a high quality and fit for the exact purpose they’re made!
We had one goal: to create a breathtaking, premium brush line that delivered amazing results.
When first released, I was very excited to snap them up but when they did launch here in Australia, they were quite expensive (ranging from $38.99 to $64.99) so I gave them a miss. However, I was lucky enough to snap these up at a recent blog sale and am so glad I did!
The Real Techniques Bold Metals Makeup Brush Collection currently consists of the following brushes (but they have also recently announced the launch of the 203 Tapered Shadow Brush):
- 100 Arched Powder Brush – GOLD
- 101 Triangle Foundation Brush – GOLD
- 200 Oval Shadow Brush – SILVER
- 201 Pointed Smudge Brush – SILVER
- 202 Angled Liner Brush – SILVER
- 300 Tapered Brush – ROSE GOLD
- 301 Flat Contour Brush – ROSE GOLD
The premium brushes have a number of features to provide a professional finish to your makeup, including: ‘weighted handles engineered for optimal control + comfort, tapered tips for advanced pick-up and buildable finish & refined artistry cuts offer high performance for ultimate application of makeup.’
The brushes are also divided by colour, with ‘Base’ brushes in Gold, ‘Eye’ brushes in Silver and ‘Finishing’ brushes in Rose Gold for easy use but I’ve found nearly all of the brushes to be fantastic multi-taskers so you really get your money’s worth! All the brushes truly are beautifully made and have such a luxe feel to them.
The weighted handles (they are actually not as heavy as I had imagined/heard) aren’t too heavy but do help stabilize the hand, making use of the brushes very easy and the bristles are incredibly soft and fluffy, allowing you to pick up product and blend it with ease. After washing them quite a few times, none of the brushes have shed at all and the metallic finish hasn’t tarnished.
Here are my thoughts on each of the brushes:
- 100 Arched Powder Brush – I always love collecting powder brushes and this one is a real standout in my collection! Incredibly soft, the bristles are cut at different lengths, allowing it to pick up product well and the brush allows the powder to be applied seamlessly, leaving a beautiful finish on the skin. It’s perfect for powders of all sorts (setting, blush, etc).
- 101 Triangle Foundation Brush – For me, if there was brush in this collection you could give a miss, this one would be it. While the triangular shape is perfect to apply foundation, especially under the eyes and around the nose, I found the bristles to be stiffer and slightly less densely packed which impacted the way the foundation was applied and I found I had to go over it with another brush or my fingers to smooth out my base.
- 200 Oval Shadow Brush – With soft and fluffy bristles, this brush picks up product very well and is perfect for both applying color to the lid and blending all over the eye.
- 201 Pointed Smudge Brush – The slightly tapered finish allows you really blend/smudge out a product in hard to reach places such as the inner corner and lower lash line. It also works well in the crease, making it a great all rounder when it comes to eye brushes.
- 202 Angled Liner Brush – This brush doesn’t only work well at applying and blending eyeliner of any form but also works well as a eyebrow brush!
- 300 Tapered Brush – Another do it all brush, it is made just as well as the others and is one I reach for everyday, whether it’s to apply a highlighter, blush, contour or to apply powder under the eyes. It picks up just the right amount of product and blends it perfectly. It’s one brush you need to try!
- 301 Flat Contour Brush – One of my favourites from the collection, the short but densely packed bristles work to blend product (whether powder or cream) seamlessly into your base. It’s a great multi-tasker and I’ve used it to apply foundation, blush, highlighter, bronzer and contour products. As the brush isn’t as flat as other contour brushes, it ensures you dont end up with a stripey finish as it buffs the product in well.
