Real-Life RoboCop Aims to Help Disabled Police Officers

Posted on the 14 February 2014 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

If you’re a fan of the original 1987 RoboCop movie, you may find the recently rebooted movie to be rather disappointing. But this news might help cheer you up because a real-life RoboCop is on the way to help us fight against crime in the future.

Meet Telebot, a six-foot tall telepresence robot that is being developed to help disabled police officers on patrol. At the moment, Telebot can’t even get close to the likes of cyborg RoboCop from the movie, but this could be the first step towards a future where human cops get to partner-up with RoboCops to solve crimes faster. Just like in Almost Human.

The Telebot RoboCop is currently being developed by a group of undergrads from Florida International University’s Discovery Lab. According to Discovery News, the robot can be controlled using an Oculus Rift combined with a motion-tracking vest, arm bands and gloves. Not sure exactly what kind of actions this robot is capable of doing at the moment but let’s hope it will learn some KungFu moves very soon.
