I should begin this post by setting the record straight. I do not man hunt!
Ugh, My poor husband. It’s a good thing he has a LOT of self confidence. The truth is, that for the two weeks we were in Denmark/Germany I was seriously searching all the time for a stylish mom. Not just any mom, I wanted THE MOM. The mom who’s keen Scandinavian style and streamlined chicness would just blow me away. And you know what?
It just didn’t happen. The closest i got was to Viking Mom (you can see her here).
Every time a mom caught my eye there was always SOMETHING about her outfit that just had to go. Mainly her shoes. It seems that moms in Copenhagen prefer technical and practical over remotely cute.
Paul, who is one half of “Adrienne and Paul”, my dear Canadian friends that met up with us in Copenhagen (you’ll be seeing a lot of them in the next few posts!), commented on how there was a huge lack of color and he couldn’t take it anymore. EVERY SINGLE SHOP, and I’m talking all of them was filled with black and white.
I was getting desperate. My time in Denmark was running out and I still hadn’t seen a single mom worthy of a street style photo session (aside from my friend Adrienne, whose relaxed and put together travel style you’ll be seeing soon).
And then I saw him….
Copenhagen Dad
We were in the Laundromat Cafe (I’ll get to that later) and my red headed 2 year old found a little red headed 4 year old to play with. The two hit it off. Their huge personalities and bigger than life temperaments instantly connected between dinosaur growls and block tower crusades. At one point the 4 year old threw a tantrum of epic proportions.
I should also state that kids in Denmark don’t throw Tantrums. Maybe it’s all of their sleekly designed wood toys, preventing their fragile minds from becoming over stimulated and aggressive….who knows?
I turned to Copenhagen Dad and said “my son does the same thing, I think its true what they say about red heads” (As another side note EVERYONE in Copenhagen speaks English and most likely another language or two).
And so began our chit chat about our feisty kids, how ridiculously expensive Copenhagen is, his girlfriend in Paris and how expensive Paris is. Then my husband chimed in and we chatted a bit about politics and random topics of conversation that I knew nothing about.
And I asked him if I could take his picture, explaining that I did a Real Mom Street Style Series but that Copenhagen mom style was just not cutting it. AND HE AGREED! And was totally cool with it. Oh and even his friend was pretty dad-stylish in a California revisited sort of way.
What He Wore
Copenhagen Dad told me the brand of his shoes, but I didn’t ask for the spelling and all I understood was something that sounds like this “Find – berg”, and his shirt brand sounded like this “Caffè Cot”…any ideas what that could mean? I do know, however, that his belt is Zara!
The Reason He Dressed – The Laundromat Cafe
I did a bit of research into the “cool” places to go to in Copenhagen and after this trip I realize that my idea of “cool” has really changed. The Laundromat Cafe was actually pretty neat and for very practical reasons, I’m happy it exists. But, but I wouldn’t exactly say it merits a trip just for the sake of visiting.
This location is in the neighbourhood Osterbro, where we stayed, and it was only a 7 minute walk from our apartment. it had everything we needed:
- Washing Machines
- A Play Area to Distract Our Son
- A Place Where We Could Wait
- Coffee
- and Copenhagen Dad
The cake we ordered was expensive (just like everything in Copenhagen) and it certainly wasn’t memorable, but it occupied my husband and satisfied his snack craving.
More than a Laundromat it is a Cafe, and I get the idea that the washers and dryers are mainly used by the staff of the Cafe for their own linens. There are only three washers and three dryers and they were all full when we arrived, so be aware of this and don’t arrive with 4 suitcases to wash.
We finally got a free washer and did a load, but took them back to our apartment to hang dry.
All in all, if you are going to Copenhagen with kids, happen to be in the Osterbro neighbourhood with your dirty clothes and you REALLY need fresh undies for tomorrow this is a GREAT PLACE for a coffee, snack and wash.
Copenhagen Dad and Copenhagen Dad’s friend were not washing anything and instead were enjoying a brunch with their kids. The brunch and burgers looked o.k. and most likely cost between $30 and $40 a person!!
