The tone set by The Darcys andRamona Falls at Glasslands last Wednesday was one of pure intrigue. Blasting the audience with both full, wall-of-sound moments and intricate periods of quiet reflection, these two groups did an excellent job of creating an atmosphere that balanced with the underlying mystery in their music.
While more elaborate, melodic guitar work seemed to suit The Darcys (@itsthedarcys) sound and vocals, their bold, coordinated strumming still managed to achieve the desired effect — it focused the sometimes scatter-brained crowd that seems to frequent Glasslands. Their vocal effects and harmonies, though a few times slightly off-kilter, brought forth an echo-laden, ethereal quality to their sound. With minimal banter between songs and instrumental extensions throughout, their set was purely about the mystifying mood their songs naturally exude.
Ramona Falls (@ramonafalls), performing songs from their recently released album, Prophet, managed to translate the minute workings and delicate/powerful transitions in their writing to the stage. Brent Knopf, formerly of Menomena, immediately locked the audience in with an earnest vocal delivery, while drummer Paul Alcott provided the backbone and energy to the band’s set. Pounding, emotive beats brought the songs together, and he even stood when possible to join the rest of his bandmates. The one negative from this, though, was the contrast it demonstrated between him and his slightly more subdued cohorts. Regardless, each member played with his own form of intensity and delivered a full set of fascinating, amazing tunes.
